The WDC on SCT program is an 18-month ‘Proof-of-Concept’ initiative led by Caldwell Williams, a retired mental health educator. The program aims to empower 240 individuals with sickle cell traits or disease, transcending their identity beyond sickness. WDC on SCT offers participants evidence of their capacity to learn, grow, and manage life changes, emphasizing ‘leadership by inclusion.’ The curriculum focuses on foundational skills such as a roadmap to achievement, empowering dialogue skills, and managing change/transitions. Graduates are equipped to enhance community mental health, with the goal of forming a team of certified facilitators. This proven approach, successful with suicidal military veterans, addresses exclusion, depression, substance abuse, and suicide within the sickle cell community. The proposal outlines a structured plan, WDC on SCT, poised to transform the life trajectory of those affected by sickle cell.
